**********
A fine Jaguar is a part of British tradition. Just the mention of the marque evokes visions of classic automotive art like the E-type and XK120 – cars whose legends live on. This reputation has been continued in recent years by the XK8. A superb Grand Tourer every inch a Jaguar and every inch a world class sports car.
Designed by Geoff Lawson the XK8 is imbued with graceful lines and smooth power delivery.
Behind the wheel, the XK8 is exceptionally comfortable. The Connolly leather seats are not too firm, and not too soft. The interior timber dashboard surrounds and steering wheel give a warmth and calmness to the cabin.
Then there’s the car’s silky suspension. Double wishbones at the front and rear are mated to progressive springs. The springs isolate and deaden bumps, and the precise, speed-sensitive steering does its part to prevent vibration. Pushing the XK8 through corners, the springs respond in kind to the aggressive inputs, but the rest of the time the car is merely agile, not tense.
The V-8 is just as flexibly calibrated. In sport mode, the five-speed automatic transmission suspends upshifts a little longer, and the growl of the engine is clean and pleasing. And while maximum torque doesn’t arrive until 4,250rpm, most of that driving force is available at lower revs, so you get plenty of boost for highway passing with very little engine effort.
The Jaguar XK8 is re-assuring and quintessentially Jaguar.
