Andre Citroen was a man with a passion for innovation. An industrialist, he visited Henry Ford’s Red River plant in Detroit in 1912 and witnessed Ford’s mass production methods for himself first-hand. In 1919 he applied these previously-unknown methods to his Parisian production facility to create the 10hp (or Type A) motor car. And so the Citroen Universe was born.
Within a year the company was manufacturing 100 cars per day. Citroen revolutionised automotive production in Europe, supplying affordable cars that were ready to drive from the factory gates, fitted with bodies, lights, wheels and tyres. Citroen also created a dealer network across France especially to service their vehicles, and in just a few years they were the largest car manufacturer in Europe.
Over the years Citroen developed itself a reputation of ongoing innovation, revolutionary technology and advanced design. Following the release of the B-10 in 1924, the world’s first all-steel-bodied car, Citroen released the Traction Avant in 1934. This car, which was to sell 760,000 units over the next 23 years, was not only the world’s first mass-produced front-wheel drive car, but also the first to feature a unitised body, greatly increasing passenger comfort and safety. This was followed by the world’s first hydropneumatic suspension system, which was featured on later models of the Traction Avant from 1954, and also new swivelling headlamps in 1967, which won Citroen unanimous acclaim.
